This piece is unique in its kind because, unlike the other pieces, its inner core is not pressed like the traditional pieces found so far, but could have been made with a kind of casting technique.
The type of frame is also telling because it is the so-called “common frame type” which already suggests that the cross comes from a late production.
The pattern on the frame is very sharp which may also indicate that an experimental assembly is possible.
This is probably a prototype, since no pieces made with such a cast technique have been found so far.
Perhaps it was not made in series because, as you can see in the picture, the contours of the number are not as sharp as on the pressed pieces, despite the fact that this piece remains in 100% condition, without loss of paint.
What makes this piece even more unique is that it is completely different from the usual, the cross also contains an LDO marking L/12 on the pin, which is already unusual, since these pieces are usually marked in the middle of the back (the exception here is the W&L pieces, because they are marked on the upper part of the pin by the manufacturer).
This piece is different from these because it is located on the back of the pin, which is absolutely unusual.
It is also interesting that I did not notice this at first, until I examined it more closely when I got it, because when I bought it, it came to me as an “unmarked” cross.
So whoever becomes the new owner of this in the future will have an exceptional example added to their collection, since I have been aging this piece for more than 16 years.
