EK2 Iron Cross / Eisernes Kreuz Deschler & Sohn so called R-3 (round 3) regular Deschler types frame variant
This is the so-called round triple type, the second most difficult to find piece out of the five different R-3 variations in existence.
As is known, the “Deschler prototype” which is considered a curiosity is a real unique among collectors, as it is very rare, but this piece takes the second place right after it, as its frequency and occurrence are not ordinary and difficult to find.
This piece, although unmarked, has been 100% proven for a long time that all types with an R-3 core can be linked to the Deschler manufacturer.
Another interesting thing is that its weight is very surprising because, as can be clearly seen in the last pictures, it is a nice thick piece with its weight of 25.89g (I added a traditional cross next to it for the sake of illustration), which is also a record compared to the pieces found so far, as usually R-3 pieces vary between 21 – 23.9g in weight.
These pieces were made in an early stage of the war, as all the pieces found so far were unmarked.
Deschl had a PKZ and later LDO license, but they were only allowed to be used on the crosses after 1941, based on a decision.
Thus, these markings are not found on the pieces made earlier, at least no pieces with such markings have been found so far.
This piece is interesting only because, as can be seen on the piece, it has the regular late Deschler frame pattern, which is why in my opinion very few pieces were made, and it was probably assembled with the remaining early type inner core, not one of the earlier frame versions.
The painting is complete and the frame has a beautiful patina due to its age.The ribbon, as seen in the picture, is the narrow version used in early times. This piece is a real unique among the crosses.
